OUT OF THE TUBES

Stuff that might be related to football. Or might not be.

The great unreported story from yesterday's game. Thank you, TBL.

I found this article about the games teams play with injury reports fascinating. During the Butch Davis years, I used to refer to it as the "weekly pack of lies" rather than "injury report". It shows that "Probable" players get into the game about 90% of the time, "Questionable" about 50% and "Doubtful" about 3%. The rule of thumb is supposed to be 75, 50, 25 respectively. We've been dutifully relaying injury reports for a number of years here, and the actual numbers feel right based on what we've seen. People reporting on the New England Patriots may have different numbers.

Following up on the link from this morning. the Bills' George Wilson will definitely be out for this weekend's game with the Browns.

Baltimore writers are agitating for Art Modell to get into the Hall of Fame. Fortunately, support for the back-stabbing ex-owner seems to be lessening, not growing. Thanks to OttoOtto for finding the link.

Lost amidst the attention given to the Patriots attempt to go 16-0, the Indianapolis Colts could be the first NFL team to get 12 wins or more for five straight seasons.

BROWNS NEWS (RSS)

The Browns find themselves in the catbird seat for the second wild card... and the subject of a lot of media attention. There are a ton of new stories on today's OBR Newswire, with more on the way throughout the day. There is a lot of good new material from the Browns beat corps, working on short deadlines during the late game in New York.

Two stories I particularly enjoyed this morning are from Rob Oller in the Columbus Dispatch, who writes about one of the NFL's many "Best Teams in History", the 1955 Browns. With each year providing a "Game of the Century" or whatever, it's good to remember back when the Browns were at the top of that mountain. Perhaps that day will come again soon.

I also really enjoyed Todd Porter's recap of the game from the perspective of the owner's box. That's a little slice of the Browns environment we don't hear much about, which is probably a good thing after the Modell era.

Here are some of the major types of stories this morning. There's also a group of stories on Joe Jurevicius, who made an unexpected contribution on special teams yesterday. As always, there's a lot more on the wire, and we'll be adding to it all day.

We'll have a report from Berea this afternoon, and lots more stuff as the day goes on.

OUT OF THE BLOGOSPHERE

The blogosphere was busy following the Browns victory over the Jets, as fans offered their views of the Browns march toward the playoffs. I've mixed in some items from the OBR as well as a couple of non-Browns items I stumbled across this morning.

Drop by the Muni Lot when you get a chance and encourage the bloggers there. This particular blog is posted there daily, and you can subscribe via RSS if you want. We actually get a ton more people who read the blogs via RSS than who actually click on the stories in the 'Lot.

ELSEWHERE AROUND THE WEB

A tech blogger who I read pretty much every day, Marc Orchant, has passed away. He was very good and, like the best bloggers, was someone whose views and opinions I had grown to trust. He'll be missed.

The Bills took a hit on defense yesterday as they may have lost their starting safety for the rest of the year.

I'm pretty sure that Peter King writing about the perils of hiring high-priced coaches will keep him off of Bill Cowher's Christmas Card list.

The new poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull looks timeless and classic. I just hope the film represents a similar return to form. No Country for Old Men is still on my need-to-see list, and There Will Be Blood sounds amazing. I can't wait to actually get some time to hit the multiplex.
